From Gracepoint Berkeley to Gracepoint Austin!!

You ask, what’s the difference between Gracepoint Berkeley and Gracepoint Austin? Answer: The weather; 70 degrees and 0% humidity versus 102 degrees and 60% humidity. Everything else felt the same, from the family atmosphere, awesome fellowship, great food, trash talking on the basketball court, and the anticipation that God is going to do something great there!!

This past week, me and 7 of my college buddies had the opportunity of going to Austin TX, to help out our church plant in any way we could. I personally felt an incredible sense of privilege as Pastor Manny and Sunny were the first ones to reach out to me and some of my friends when we first got to Berkeley. Fast forward just a couple of years (haha), and now we had the chance to help them out, and boy did we feel such a sense of joy doing so!

We went to the dc’s, designed flyers, hosted our own basketball tournament, went on campus tours and prayer walks, built sign boards, shelves, dressers, designed websites, ate incredible southern bbq, tex-mex, and Sunny’s cooking, visited museums, presidential libraries, attended Koinonia bible study where we had our first UT students join us, went bowling where I lost my voice yelling, and so much more. As I worked and hung out with my friends, I was amazed at the fact that we’ve known each other for the past 12 years, since we were freshmen at Cal. And now we were serving together.

More than all this, I am so excited to think that Pastor Manny, Sunny, and our entire Austin church planting team are there to share the gospel and recreate the community we have here in Berkeley. My heart was broken as I heard that multiple churches in the Austin area have pulled out of college ministry simply because it is too difficult. I believe that God brought us out to Austin for a reason, because his heart longs for people to come to know his love and saving grace.

Please join all of us as our entire church continues to pray for GFC Austin and the UT campus!! As our Austin team would say, “Hook ’em Horns.”

O wow! I would’ve never known it was UT Austin. Looking at the pictures it feels just like Cal. But of course, Pastor Manny giving the long horn sign…

There was also all the orange everywhere. I can’t believe how much orange there was on that campus.

On our last day, I was looking for souvenirs, but i didn’t want to have anything orange or with a glaring longhorns mascot because I don’t want ppl to falsely accuse me of routing for Texas, like Pastor Manny. It was actually really difficult! I’d like to say that I am still all blue and gold!!

Caveat that Andy was that close to becoming a closet Longhorns fan. =)

    P. Manny has no problem making the longhorns sign. What the UT students asked him was to make a C in his hand and then transform it to the longhorns sign… and then look happy. He hesitated a few times before saying he couldn’t do it. Only 3 weeks and he’s already started to change his colors.

haha, wow. Pastor Manny is gone, it really hits after you see these pictures with sun-burnt orange. Either way, I’m glad our church has a vision to not remain a close-knit community but do things more and more for the kingdom of God.

    Hi Andy,
If humidity is holding you back from going to Gracepoint Fellowship in Austin, come on up to Waypoint church where it’s hot but dry. That is, unless you’re sweating because you’re giving a sermon. 🙂 Thanks for coming up that one time and we’ll see you again!

    Hey Pastor Jonathan,
It was my pleasure to come out to Davis (except for the stress of needing to preach there), and I’m so thankful to see the growth of Waypoint, Davis after personally being there for the inaugural, the 5th Anniversary, and the 10th anniv!!

However, it’s sad that many of my students don’t know you or many of the Davis folks. Since I know you are very busy, maybe you can send one of the Davis staff down to give a bible study at Kairos. Maybe one of my college friends, Ming or Jacob. I would gladly schedule them in at the beginning of the fall semester before you guys have your welcome week (which I believe is a month after Berkeley’s) 🙂

Thanks also for all your hard work in building and coordinating the work up at the Sierra Lodge. Many of us here at Kairos have enjoyed the fruit of your labor!!

I was fortunate enough to be able to go to the Waypoint SWS two weeks ago (for the first time)! I went there — with some of my peers here at Gracepoint, Berkeley — to attend the baptism service, where one of our peers there (finally) got dunked. I just wanted to say that it was a joy seeing all the familiar faces there!

    Hi Andy,
I’m all for having Ming and/or Jacob go down to Gracepoint Church to have good fellowship with you in Berkeley…while giving a Bible study! Isn’t our core values Raising Up and Giving It All? 🙂
