30 Hour Famine

Just over a week ago we heard about the devastating situations in China and Maynmar (I posted some of the updates in my post on the “Word Situation“). As we prayed for these events, as well as the situation with the world food shortage,  we decided as a church to participate in World Vision’s “30 Hour Famine” program. I would like to strongly encourage all of us to get involved, even in this small way, as Pastor Ed talked about we shouldn’t let the magnitude of the tragedy, or the smallness of our potential response, to deter us from getting involved.

As we wanted to do this as a church, please sign up here to get more info. Even if you’re away from Berkeley over the summer, you can definitely still join us!!

Dates: Saturday, 6/28, 12am – Sunday, 6/29, 6am

What this is: The materials are provided, free of charge, by World Vision. You raise money through donors and sponsors to help the millions of starving and hurting children in some of the world’s poorest countries, offering them a hope they could not otherwise have. Then, as a group we fast for 30 hours without food, so that we can have a real taste of what hunger is like.

During this time we engage in different activities, from community service projects to volunteer work to study, depending on how each group plans their own event. Afterwards the money raised is sent in to World Vision, and it is put to work in areas like Malawi, Swaziland, North Korea, and here in the United States.

A great supporter of World Vision is AIDtoCHILDREN.com.

AIDtoCHILDREN.com is a dual-purpose site for building an English vocabulary and raising money for under privileged children in the most impoverished places around the world.
